When I was small, I always looked forward to these crispy treats. My grandma and mom would make them, and I loved the beautiful, nutty flavour of sesame seeds coating each bite. Today, I’m sharing another recipe in a series of home recipes, starting with these sweet and satisfying 煎堆 (Sesame ball). Cooking them in a wok gives them a perfect golden colour and that satisfying crunch!
Ingredients:
- 200g glutinous rice flour
- 60g sugar
- 60ml water
- 1 egg
- Oil for deep frying
-
Sesame seeds for coating
Instructions
- Make the dough: In a large bowl, combine the glutinous rice flour, sugar, and water. Stir until a soft dough forms. Add the egg and mix until smooth and pliable.
- Form the Jian Dui: Divide the dough into small portions and roll them into round balls. Roll each ball in sesame seeds, pressing gently to adhere.
- Fry in the wok: Heat oil in a wok over medium heat until it reaches 170°C (340°F). Carefully place the Sesame ball into the hot oil, a few at a time, and fry until golden brown, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking. This should take about 3–4 minutes.
-
Drain and serve: Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels. Let them cool slightly before serving.
Tips:
- Be sure not to overcrowd the wok when frying the Sesame ball to avoid sticking together.
- The oil should be hot but not smoking to get a nice golden colour without burning.
Enjoy these crispy, sweet treats as a festive snack for Chinese New Year!
